Opening Moneyline: Tigers +135/ Orioles -145 O/U 9.5 runs
Time: 7:05 PM EST Thursday April 7, 2011
Last night the Tigers handed the Orioles their first loss of the season and tonight is the rubber game with Baltimore winning the first game of the series on Monday night. Before last night’s game the Orioles had begun the season 4-0 in their first time in 14 seasons and since Buck Showalter became the head coach in the 2nd half of last season Baltimore has the best record in the American League.
In last night’s game the Tigers beat the Orioles 7-3.
The Tigers’ pitching has been terrible ranking 28th in the league in team ERA and that was their big issue heading into the season and last night was their first solid pitching performance of the season. After only 5 games they lead the Majors with 6 wild pitches.
Detroit was hoping that former Ace Brad Penny (0-1 16.62 ERA) could help their young staff, but he was shelled in his first start giving up 7 hits and 8 earned runs in only 4 innings of work. He will take the mound for the Tigers in this game and Detroit will need a strong outing from him. Taking the hill for the Orioles is Chris Tillman (0-0 0.00 ERA), who was stellar in his first start of the season not giving up any hits or any earned runs in 6 innings of work, but got a no-decision in a 3-1 win.
The Orioles had gotten stellar pitching and in their first 4 games they had given up only 1 run in each and they rank 1st in the Majors in team ERA, WHIP, and opponents’ batting average. However, last night they gave up 7 runs on 12 hits.
Detroit slugger Miguel Cabrera (.368 3 HR 6 RBI) has got off to a good start to the season, but he has not got much help. Leadoff hitter Austin Jackson (.150) and 2nd slot hitter Will Rhymes (.143) are really struggling.
The Orioles may have to win this game with their pitching, as their offense has not been scoring many runs. Their 2 big off-season additions of Vladimir Guerrero (.200) and David Lee (.222) have not been hitting, but Nick Markakis (.353) and Matt Wieters (.294) are picking up the slack. Lee hit is first HR of the season last night and he needs to get it going to help an Orioles’ offense that only ranks 19th in the Majors in runs scored and 24th in team batting average.
In some other betting trends for this American League match up:
Detroit is 2-7 in their last 9 games as an underdog, 3-7 in their last 10 games against a right-handed starter, and has an Over record of 4-1 in their last 5 games.
Baltimore is 7-1 in their last 8 games as a favorite, 8-2 in their last 10 home games against a right-handed starter, and has an Under record of 4-1 in their last 5 home games.
Our Selection : he Orioles have won 4 games this season, but haven't been hitting up a storm. As a team they have hit under .200 in 3 of their 5 games this season. Tillman sure did look good in his first outing, but that was versus a Tampa bay team whose hitters haven't hit their stride. The Orioles as a favorite last season was a rarity and definitely not profitable. Take the Tigers +135 at 5Dimes using their reduced MLB betting lines.
