Philadelphia Phillies at Washington Nationals Betting Odds

Opening Moneyline: Phillies -175/ Nationals +185 O/U 7 runs (Under -115)

Time: 7:05 PM EST Wednesday April 12th, 2011 on ESPN2

The Nationals have gotten off to a decent start and they beat the Phillies last night, but can they win tonight facing last season’s Cy Young winner? Roy Halladay has been stellar so far this season and last season he was 3-0 against Washington with an ERA of only 0.39. The Phillies are in first place in the NL East and they are looking to avoid back-to-back losses for the first time this season.

In last night’s game between these 2 teams the Nationals beat the Phillies 7-4.

This season the Nationals are 2-2 at home and the Phillies are 2-2 on the road.

Halladay (1-0 0.69 ERA) is on the hill for the Phillies tonight and in his last start he went 7 innings not giving up any earned runs in a win. On the mound for the Nationals tonight is John Lannan (1-0 3.60 ERA) who in his last outing gave up 3 earned runs on 5 innings in a no-decision.

Philadelphia is 4-0 in Halladay’s last 4 starts as a road favorite and Washington is 4-1 in Lannan’s last 5 starts.

To say that Lannan has had no luck against the Phillies is a major understatement, as in his career he is 0-8 with a 6.09 ERA in 11 starts against Philly and last season was 0-2 with an ERA of 6.91 in 3 starts. He has his work cut out for him tonight, as the Phillies rank 4th in the league in runs and 1st in the league in team batting average and on-base percentage.

Washington will need some guys to step up since 1B Ryan Zimmerman (.357), who is swinging a hot bat, was recently put on the 15-day DL. Lannan will likely have to pitch a great game since the Nationals’ offense only ranks 22nd in the league in runs.

Raul Ibanez is 10 for 15 with 4 extra-base hits against Lannan, including 2 home runs, but Ryan Howard, who went deep last night and ranks 1st in the Majors in RBI and 2nd in HR, has struggled facing Lannan only hitting .185 with 11 strikeouts in 27 at-bats against the left-hander.

Washington’s big off-season acquisition Jayson Werth came into last night’s game only hitting .200, but he had a HR and a double last night and he is key tonight being the big power guy for the Nationals.

In some other betting trends for this NL East match up:

Philadelphia is 9-1 in their last 10 road games against a left-handed starter, 1-4 in their last 5 games as a road favorite, and has an Over record of 5-1 in their last 6 road games.

Washington is 4-0 in their last 4 games against a right-handed starter, 4-1 in their last 5 games, and has an Over record of 6-0 in their last 6 games.

Our Selection : Halladay has made quality starts in 7 of his last 8 games dating back to last season and we don't look for that to change tonight. He faced the Nationals 3 times last season allowing 1 run in 23 innings. We're going to stay away from laying the -170 and instead lay a little juice on the runline.
