Giants lead best of 7 series 2-0
On Saturday night in Game 3 of the World Series the Texas Rangers host the San Francisco Giants in a vital game for the Rangers, who dropped the first 2 games in the City by the Bay. The Giants only ranked 17th in the league this season in runs, as they have relied on their pitching, but in the first 2 games in San Francisco the Giants scored 20 runs including beating the Rangers in Game 2 9-0. The Giants only scored 19 runs in the 6 games in the NLCS against the Phillies and have already surpassed that total already in this series.
History is not on the side of the Rangers, as the last 51 teams that have taken a 2-0 lead 41 went on to win the Fall Classic. The Giants have won the World Series each time they have taken a 2-0 lead in 1922, 1933 and 1954, but that was when they were back east and they have yet to win a title since they moved to San Francisco.
The Rangers' bats went silent in Game 2, as they were shut out and only had 4 hits on the night.
Colby Lewis (12-13 3.72 ERA) takes the mound for the Rangers in Game 3 and in his last outing he was stellar going 8 innings giving up only 3 hits and 1 earned run in the series-clinching Game 6 against the New York Yankees. Taking the hill for the Giants is Jonathan Sanchez (13-9 3.07 ERA) who in his last outing only went 2 innings and gave up 2 earned runs, but was taken out early when he hit Chase Utley with a pitch and the benches cleared.
While the Rangers are 4-0 in Lewis' last 4 starts when he has at least 7 days of rest the 3rd game in series' has not been kind to him, as the Rangers are 0-4 in their last 4 games when he starts game 3 of a series.
In the 15 innings Sanchez has pitched in the post-season he has given up 5 earned runs. The Giants are 4-1 in the last 5 games Sanchez has started.
Nelson Cruz and Josh Hamilton have to get it going, as they are a combined 2/17 in the series. The Rangers are only hitting .227 in the series while the Giants are hitting .314.
Game 3 is obviously not the game that will clinch the series, but if the Rangers lose they will have to make MLB history to come back and win the World Series since no team has ever come back from a 3-0 deficit.
