Opening Line: Giants -4

Total Odds: 44

Time: 4:15 PM EST Sunday January 2, 2011 on FOX

Washington (5-9) is out of the playoff picture, but they can kill the chances of NFC East rival New York (9-6) with a home win this Sunday. The Giants have lost 2 straight and for them to make the playoffs they will have to beat the Redskins and have the Packers lose to the Bears.

The Giants were playing great D for most of the season but in their last 2 games they have given up an average of 41.5 ppg. The Redskins snapped their 4-game losing streak with an upset win over the Jaguars in Jacksonville last week and they can end their tumultuous season on a high note with a win this Sunday.

In their last games the Redskins beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 20-17 in OT while the Giants were crushed by the Green Bay Packers losing 45-17.

This season the Giants are 7-8 ATS and the Redskins are 7-6-2 ATS. The Giants have covered the spread in their last 4 games in Washington.

The Redskins lost to the Giants in Week 13 and in that game Washington could not stop the run and they had 6 turnovers.

The Giants and their 8th ranked passing defense gave up over 400 passing yards last week in their blowout loss to the Packers last week. The Redskins have the league’s 10th ranked passing offense and new starting QB Rex Grossman may have to put up numbers like that for the Redskins to pull off the home upset. He has played well in the 2 games since taking over for Donovan McNabb and last week he passed for 182 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT.

The Skins’ rushing offense has struggled all season and last week Ryan Torain rushed for 65 yards averaging only 3.3 yards per carry and if he can help Grossman out it by running the ball well the Redskins have a better shot at a win.

Eli Manning threw 4 picks last week, but this week faces a weak Redskins pass defense that only ranks 31st in the league and only has 13 INT on the season. Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw both struggled last week, but in the Week 13 win over the Skins they combined to rush for 197 yards. The Skins’ run defense only ranks 25th in the league, but they held Jacksonville to only 78 rushing yards last week. However, that stat may be a little misleading since Washington did not have to face Maurice Jones-Drew, who ranks 4th in the league in rushing yards, because of an injury.

The Redskins do not have a great offense and unless they play a good game on defense this game may get ugly like it did in Week 13.

In some other betting trends for this NFC match up :

New York is 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games, 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games following a S.U. loss, and has an Over record of 5-2 in their last 7 games as a favorite.

Washington is 0-2-2 ATS in their last 4 home games, 5-2-2 ATS in their last 9 games against teams with a winning record, and has an Under record of 5-1 in their last 6 games.

Our Selection :It's hard to believe that the Redskins are improved with Rex Grossman at QB, but it's a fact. Washington could win this game and the points are just a bonus. Take the Redskins +4 at 5Dimes.com.
