Most amateur weekend football handicapper’s tend to stay away from betting on preseason games. Their mindset is that how can you bet on games that don’t matter, where coaches are using the game to evaluate the talent of young players and the 2nd and 3rd stringers will be playing most of the game.
The truth is that preseason football is great time to get your bankroll off to a positive start. This is the only time of the year were the coaches actually publicly let you know their game plan for each game. Information about how long a coach will keep in his starters can be found on team and local news sites.
Team depth also plays a key role in handicapping preseason games most of the time 2nd and 3rd stringers will be playing at least half of the game. Teams with more depth at the skilled position have a huge advantage. For example a team that has 2 or 3 journeyman quarterbacks that the coach is looking at who will be his backup going forward. Now they’re going up against a team that is taking a look at their rookie QB that they drafted in the 1st or 2nd round that probably won’t even see one second of playing time during the regular season.
These are of just a few examples of different angles in handicapping preseason games .Majority of the information is out there on the net. But, you have to put in the time to research and analyze to be successful at betting this type of games. Unfortunately, most weekend football bettors don’t have that luxury.
This is where we come in. Our staff keeps on top of all the breaking news. Whether it’s info on the coach’s game plan, maybe a starting quarterback will be only playing in the 1st quarter. Maybe a couple of players are a little banged up and won’t be playing at all. Bookmark our site to get our free NFL preseason picks.
(September 2) The Lions top running back rookie J. Best will sit out tonight's game while QB M. Stafford is likely to make only a cameo appearance. Detroit's offensive fire power drops off significantly with those two out. The Bills on the other hand are likely to give the offensive starters a quarter or more of action as they need more playing time to learn the new offense. After the starters are out, Buffalo
really stands out with great depth at RB (even with Spiller sitting) and a huge advantage with their secondary depth. Tons of roster spot battles make this an easy play on the Bills.
Take the Bills +4.5 at 5Dimes in what should be an outright win. (Pending)
(August 25) Packers QB A. Rogers has looked great in limited action in preseason. Manning has also looked good in limited action in his two starts. The report card for both of theses team’s defensive play isn’t as rosy. Injuries are the main reason for the high number of points allowed by Green Bay and for the Colts the lack of offense from the second and third stringers leaving the defense on the field too long. The health of the Packers defense doesn’t appear to have improved and with Manning and the rest of the first string offense expected to play the first half and possibly some of the third quarter we think that the linesmaker has this betting line a little on the high side.
Take the Colts +3.5 at Bodog. (Loss)
(August 23)The Cardinals are very thin at wide receiver tonight with Fitzgerald and Douecette both out. Titans coach Fisher plaeased was so pleased with the team's early week practices that he used the final practice to game plan against the Cardinals. Something that it is rarely done in preseason.
Take Tennessee -4 at Sportsbook.com. (Win)
(August 22) We believe that the linesmakers have weighted this line for the Brett Favre factor. Yes he will play, but it's reported that he will in for about ten snaps.
We think he'll be a no factor as his two main weapons, wide receivers Harvin and Rice are both out. The 49ers have some injuries of their own on offense with TE Davis and WR Crabtree not suiting up. San Fran's starting QB Smith didn't look very sharp in in the preseason opener and should see extended time behind center tonight. New offensive coordinator Raye is likely to keep the first string offense in for most of the first half. Head coach Singletary takes winning in the preseason seriously with a 4-1 lifetime record.
Take the 49ers -2.5 at 5Dimes. (Win)
(August 19) While many bettors may look to play the over in this game after the disgraceful performances of the Bills and Colts defenses last week, we’re going against the public in this game. The Bills should be improved on defense this game with it being their second game playing the 3-4 and with more healthy bodies. Putting up points which of late has been a problem for Buffalo will be even more difficult with their top tandem of running backs sidelined as well as a huge shortage of depth at wide receiver with three WRs out. Manning is likely to be limited to one series and if Painter doesn’t toss three INTs again this game should fall under the listed line.
Take Under 33.5 points at 5Ddimes. (loss)
(August 16) The Jets offensive starters won't see extended time tonight and it's a big drop off to their second and third teamers. Sorgi should play for at least a half for the Giants in what should be considered a home game for them.
Take the Giants +3 +105 at Bodog. (Win)
(August 15) The Bengals will have a decided edge by playing in this their second game of the preseason while the Broncos are playing their first. Denver is extremely thin at RB tonight.
Take Cincinnati -3.5 at 5Dimes. (Win)
(August 13) The Bills and the Redskins are trying to learn a new offensive scheme and both have new personnel on the offensive line that will need some time to gel and depth will also be an issue tonight with each team having some key injuries.
Take the under 33.5 at Bodog. (loss)
(August 13) While the Falcons did fail to make the playoffs last season I don’t think that many handicappers would put these two teams in the same grouping as far as talent and depth. However, the Chiefs do have a lot of young talent with many in battles for a starting position. The Falcons on the other hand have most of their key starting positions locked up. Atlanta’s head coach Mike Smith has already
stated that his starters will be very limited tonight and that they’ll be going with a vanilla offense.
Take the Under 34 at 5Dimes. (Win)
(August 12) Normally we’d stay away from an over in the NFL preseason games, but both these teams are banged up defensively. The Ravens may play without both starting corners and Panthers’ head coach John Fox has stated that offensively the starters will play about a quarter.
Take the over 34 at Sportsbook.com. (loss)
