Odds to win Super Bowl XLVI

Surprisingly the Green Bay Packers winners of Super Bowl 45 are not the betting favorite to win Super Bowl XLVI. Like last season the sportsbooks have opened the New England Patriots as the favorite to win the 2012 Super Bowl. Let's take a look at the main contenders for SuperBowl 46 and the wagering odds on all 32 NFL teams.

AFC Contenders

New England Patriots Odds: +500

The Patriots looked like they would roll to another Super Bowl last season, but in their first round playoff game the New York Jets executed a simple defensive scheme in their upset win. Look for teams to do that a lot this season against the Pats. The young Patriots’ defense came up big in the second half of the season, but they could use help in the secondary and in their pass rush. Tom Brady leads a great offense, but the D may need a little tinkering.

Pittsburgh Steelers Odds: +800

The defending AFC champs really have to bolster their offensive line and if they can do that they may be a great betting value at +800. Big Ben was so banged up last season and he still almost won his 3rd Super Bowl. The defense will be the strength again, but Pittsburgh needs some help in their secondary since their pass defense only ranked 21st in the league and Rodgers torched them in the Super Bowl.

Baltimore Ravens Odds: +1200

The Ravens are a solid team, but they have a long list of free agents. Ray Lewis is no spring chicken any more and the pass defense needs some help. Joe Flacco has a year with Anquan Boldin under his belt and this QB/WR duo may combine for a huge season.

New York Jets Odds: +1200

The Jets may be a great betting value at +1200 since they are young and will be solid on both sides of the ball. LaDainian Tomlinson is coming back and QB Mark Sanchez just gets better each season. There are many good WR’s in the draft this season and the Jets may take advantage of that. The WR combo of Braylon Edwards and Santonio Holmes are both free agents.

San Diego Chargers Odds: +1200

Can the Chargers finally get off to a good start? They have the QB in Phillip Rivers, but the jury is still out with RB Ryan Mathews, who showed signs of a legit 1st round pick last season, but he was injured often. Rivers needs some targets, as WR Malcom Floyd and Vincent Jackson are both likely out of San Diego as free agents.

NFC Contenders

Green Bay Packers Odds: +600

The Packers may be a good betting value at +600, but it is never easy repeating. They need to do some work in the draft to improve their offensive line. Who will be the featured RB this season James Starks or Brandon Jackson? Whoever is in the backfield has to help Aaron Rodgers out, especially when they face teams with a good secondary. They could also use some run stopping help on D.

Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants Odds: +1500

The Giants missed out on the playoffs last season, but they will likely be back this season. RB Brandon Jacobs has made things right with head coach Tom Coughlin and the WR corps should be better than last season when they were decimated by injures. They will draft for defense in the early rounds. The Eagles tagged Michael Vick with their franchise tag and they will go as far as he takes them. They have several defensive starters that are free agents and they will need to fill those holes in the draft or through free agency.

Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints Odds: +1500

The Falcons need to make some tough free agency decisions on TE Tony Gonzalez and OLB Mike Peterson and if they lose these guys they may struggle. Atlanta’s run defense only ranks 23rd in the league and they need to get some run stoppers in the off season. The Saints have the passing offense, but their RB corps has to stay healthy. New Orleans also needs some help in the pass rush.
