This is a great time of the year for pro football fans with the NFL preseason schedule underway and the regular season kickoff just around the corner. For bettors this is a great time to start thinking about placing some wagers on team season win totals.
For those new to betting, season win wagering is basically an over/under proposition. The lines maker sets the number of wins for each team based on scheduling, off season acquisitions and public perception. The bettor then places a bet on if the team will win more or less games than the bookmakers listed number. For example, Online sportsbook BetUS has listed the Houston Texans under over victories at 8. If you thought that with their super tough schedule (based on last season’s opponent’s records) that they would be hard pressed to duplicate their 9 wins from last season, then you’d play the under.
Staff Pick
We’re going to make two wagers on the 2010 season. Our top choice is the UNDER 5 wins for the St. Louis Rams. You could argue that their division may be weaker this season with both the Seahawks and the Cardinals going with basically untried quarterbacks, but what about the Rams? At some point they’re going to start Sam Bradford and to think that a rookie QB is going to result in an additional 4-5 wins this year is basically ludicrous. Our second wager is on the under 9.5 wins for the New England Patriots. The AFC East has gotten stronger in the offseason and don’t forget that the Patriots won only one game on the road last season.
