NFL FUTURE BETTING
One of the more popular forms of betting on sports is placing a future wager. This is a bet placed in advance of a sports event. Future betting offers excellent value because the odds are released prior to the season start. An example of popular future betting is in the NFL. Offshore sportsbooks release their future odds way in advance of the season start for the NFC championship, AFC championship and of course the Super Bowl.
The main reason seasoned bettors place future bets on these odds is the excellent value they present. Let's say for example the odds to win the Super Bowl are available and Dallas is showing 20-1 to win it all. Half way through the season the odds makers have seen the trends, the odds could drop to 10-1 because they appear to be a possible contender, so the value would be in the future bet on the Cowboys at 20-1.
Expert handicappers understand the true value of future betting and are aware of possible variables that determine what could change a team's performance or enhance it. There are several things to consider when making your future bet including the draft, if there have been any coaching changes, free agent signings, returning starters etc. All these things will help determine how a team might perform in a given year.
When considering the draft choices a team makes, a good handicapper will look at the perspective choices of each team and find the value in that.
Another key point to watch is player movement in the league. The movement of superstars from one team to another can change the balance of a particular conference.
This movement of players often gives the future bettor a sense that a team may have a bettor run at a championship.
One of the biggest factors in determining a future bet is a change in coaching. A team may have all the ingredients on the field to win a championship but lack the leadership to get them there. This fact is evident when Tampa Bay managed to land Jon Gruden by giving up a lot of cash and several draft picks but in the end it paid off in spades with a Super Bowl Championship in 2003.
Once you have researched the information you need to make an educated future bet you need to find the true value in the bet. Look for a team who was average the prior year but have added new strengths to their roster that makes them a possible contender.
Many amateur bettors tend to take a future bet on the preseason favorite. Unfortunately the payoffs for these teams are relatively small and a much larger bet is required to make it worthwhile. This isn't necessarily the right thing to do as any team can be a contender and wagering large amounts of money on the favorite could be a fatal mistake.
Now that you understand the philosophy surrounding future bets we wish you luck in the upcoming 2008 NFL season.
